A Brief History of LIPS

Following a motorcycle accident and potential “loss of licence” insurance claim in 2005, former Captain Andrew Bell (since moved on from Emirates) commissioned an actuarial study into the feasibility of starting an in house income protection scheme for Emirates pilots.

The favourable result of this study led to the formation of what today is LIPS (the Emirates Pilots Loss of Income Protection Scheme) in 2006.

LIPS grew rapidly to 500 members, or over a third of the pilot body at the time, in just over a year and with the responsibilities of managing such a large scheme LIPS commenced a restructuring drive in late 2007 to its current format.

With a capital sum of over Dhs 5 Million conservatively invested, and a small number of claims, LIPS is able to withstand over 8 times the statistical industry average loss of licence rate.
